National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30th, Orange Shirt Day) is a time for all of us to remember and honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, as well as their families and communities.
Reconciliation is a participatory and ongoing process for all Canadians. One of the most important ways to become involved is by educating ourselves about the issues that Indigenous Peoples face every day. We can also participate by supporting Indigenous artists, businesses, Friendship Centres, and activist movements.
This is the day that has been set aside but we all need to remember that the effects of Residential Schools (and Colonization) on Indigenous Families are not in the past, there are ongoing consequences every day.
